With discoveries in optics, motion and mathematics, Newton developed the principles of modern physics. In 1687, he published his most acclaimed work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy), which has been called the single most influential book on physics. Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519) was an Italian man who lived in the time of the Renaissance. He was good at lots of things, but was most famous as a painter. He also was a scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician, and a writer. Leonardo was curious about everything in nature. He wanted to know how everything worked. He was very good at studying, designing and making all sorts of interesting things. Many people think that Leonardo was one of the greatest painters of all time. Other people think that he was the most talented person ever to have lived. The art historian Helen Gardner said that no-one has ever been quite like him because he was interested in so many things that he seems to have had the mind of a giant, and yet what he was like as a person is still a mystery. Leonardo was born at Vinci which is a small town near Florence, Italy. He was trained to be an artist by the sculptor a...

SUSE – “Will not diverge from its Open Source roots!”

SUSE – “Will not diverge from its Open Source roots!” No one had a busier LinuxCon show than the folks at SUSE. Yet still they were gracious enough, and care enough about the community, to sit down for a talk with Linux Journal. We had the distinct pleasure of sitting down for a few minutes during LinuxCon with Michael Miller, SUSE’s VP of Global Alliances and Marketing, to talk about their announcements, their future and the future of Linux, SUSE had a major announcement at LinuxCon: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is the first and currently only server operating system supported by the recently announced KVM for IBM z Systems, open source-based server virtualization for the IBM mainframe. The announcement coincided with IBM's launch of LinuxONE, a new portfolio of Linux systems based on the z Systems mainframe: The LinuxONE Emperor, a mighty, muscular machine aimed at large enterprise and the LinuxONE Rockhopper, a more entry-level machine aimed at emerging markets that ...

BitTorrentSync: Dropbox for Nerds.

Immagine
BitTorrentSync: Dropbox for Nerds. It's not really fair to compare Dropbox directly with BitTorrentSync. First of all, my title implies Dropbox is somehow inferior. To be honest, I haven't found anything that works as smoothly as Dropbox when it comes to sync reliability and ease of installation. That said, although it has incredible strengths, it also has a few shortcomings. One, it's not free, and if you have a lot of data, it can be expensive. Two, your data is stored on the Dropbox servers. The second one is a showstopper for many folk BitTorrent Sync. BitTorrentSync uses the BitTorrent protocol to keep multiple locations in sync. Everything is stored on your own machines, and you're limited only by your own storage limitations. The basic features of BitTorrentSync are free, but like Dropbox, there is a paid version. For me, quantity of storage is the most important feature with a syncing app, and with BitTorrentSync, that's unlimited. If you've ...

Linux and the Internet of Things.

Linux and the Internet of Things. I wake up in the middle of the night, mouth parched and vision blurry, and fumble around to find my iPhone. I press my thumb to the fingerprint scanner, and in the dim blue light, just out of instinct, I squint at the screen, find the right app, open it, and check the ambient temperature and air quality indoors. It turns out my goose bumps are lying; the temperature is quite comfortable and not arctic-level freezing, which is how it feels to me. Now, I touch a virtual switch, and warm yellow light illuminates my way to the kitchen. I slowly waddle towards the water bottle without stumbling over one of my cats, have a drink, and safely waddle back to bed. Another tap on my app screen, and the light fades away; I sleep. This is my reality, and an increasingly common one in many people's homes. The only difference? My tech is mostly self-made—with few exceptions, of course. Our homes slowly but surely fill up with small, smart gadgets th...

Django Models.

Immagine
Django Models. In my last article, I continued looking at the Django Web framework, showing how you can create and modify models. As you saw, Django expects you to describe your models using Python code. The model description is then transformed into SQL and compared with any previous version of the model that might have existed. Django then creates a "migration", a file that describes how you can move from one version of the model definition to the next. A migration is a fantastic tool, one that allows developers to move their database forward (and backward) in defined chunks. Migrations make it easier to collaborate with others and upgrade existing applications. The thing is, migrations have little or nothing to do with the day-to-day application that you want to run. They are useful for the creation and maintenance of your application's models, but in your application, you're going to want to use the models themselves. So in this article, I look at Dja...
